Quotes, Art and Editing
about 1 month ago – Tue, Jul 07, 2026 at 07:32:42 AM

“Oh sunless peak, of sky-black stone unwrought, twisted reach unto the heavens, of starry skies once walked, by heathen hands and majest’ied light, unto a garden lost and pure, for a maiden ‘saked by god and man, ‘hind thy silver shroud, unsought.”

- Last remaining fragment of the Psalm “Oh Moon Above, Thy Miseries Untold”

Since we last spoke...

The past month has been spent hard at work refining Doomspiral, going through final moments of editing, condensing layout to make information but still beautiful dense spreads, tweaking a variety of maps, sorting information flow, and generally working to finalise this tome of a book.

We know it’s frustrating to wait, but we want to make sure Doomspiral is the best it can possibly be before it gets to your hands. Thank you all so much for your patience, we’re just as keen as you to get this book into your hands and on to your game tables.

Information Design and Sharing Secrets

Every corner of Doomspiral’s world is filled with secrets and information, and we want the book to be too, so we’ve been stuffing every available gap with a variety of NPC quotes, poetic tales and lore. For example, the one at the start of this update goes with the The Eastern Face of the Mountains of the Moon, an area steeped in grief and mystery. Not all of the book has such prophetic energy, our friend Industrious Eddie has the following to say about the Mirrormire:

“Hhyyurghk… makes me wretch just ta’ fink of it. That great greasy morass, rotten right down to the core, to the bone. Me great-hearted Mam told me ‘was gods of beautiousness what ruled ‘ere… Now, I’d never mistrust me Wonde’ful Mam, but sometimes… I do wonde’ where she ‘eard it.” - Industrious Eddie

Art (Harken! Spoilers ahead)

As for more teasers, there are dozens and dozens of art pieces you haven’t seen yet. Here’s a few new pieces from Dywn, with spoilers abound.

Aegnmere of Basseyngad, an armour and fur clad knight on a quest seeking a fire that could reignite his frozen homeland.

Beneath the surface of the earth is a forest named the Underwode, and beneath the Underwode is the Grand Lake of Mud, and within that bubbling moirass is something luminous and reaching.

Three Star-Gazing Knights, in supplication before another creature from the night’s sky.

A piece on the six orders of Knights found in Weftenthaal: The purpose-seeking Star-Gazing from the Seared Lands, the mountain-guarding Moonsheen Knights, the Knights-Prosperant who watch the Threshold City, the Vigil-Keeping knights who protect the secrets of the Guardianess, the Nightstone Knights who fight for the Raintamer, and the Champions of the Dead who sleep in Amn’s Necropolis.

Both Zach and Nick are big fans of Vermis, and particularly the page: "Beware of the states that can permanently damage your flesh and mind". This piece detailing the various Doomspiral Statuses is our reference and homage to that iconic spread.

We’ll be back soon with another update, and hopefully a finished PDF to put into your hands. We’re so excited to share with you the world we’ve so lovingly created.

Thanks,
Zach, Nick & the rest of the Doomspiral team

The Biggest Edit Job We've Ever Done
3 months ago – Tue, Jun 02, 2026 at 04:04:13 AM

Greeting to those who seek souls, blood echoes, runes or thread,

Last month we said we'd release Doomspiral by the end of May. We've missed our target, primarily due to the massive editing job the heroic Cody Faulk has completed over the last few weeks.

This is SoulMuppet's biggest game yet, and our most mechanically complicated. We're going to be about 270 pages... Which is wild. There's more than 2000 comments on the doc, and a running total of 2000 words of editing notes.

Give us a little bit more type, and we'll have Doomspiral on your table.

As a treat, here's a sick banner Dwyn has finished of Gwyddain the Raintamer, godly Lord of Storm Tower and the Floodplains:

"Mmmm, high you have climbed, Forsaken. Much you must have overcome.” He turns, wind-whipped and rain-battered, yet unbending, unbreaking. “Alas, all for nought!”

See ya soon,

Zach, Mol and the rest of the Doomspiral Team

Work Continues
4 months ago – Tue, May 05, 2026 at 05:38:50 AM

The layout of Doomspiral is completed, coming in at a hefty 260 pages. We're now at work on editing it, and aiming to release the final file of the core rules, character creation and adventure campaign to our backers before the end of the month, and begin printing physicals.

There's some images below, but be wary of spoilers... Players should likely not read on.

The frontmatter introcrawl of the game
The full list of playable Starting Backgrounds. Which will you be creating first?
The intro to our campaign, the LAND OF THE GODS, with clues on resolving mysteries.
The Mirrormire Manse, with its ruined and mirrored fragments, interwoven by mirror-doors.
The Danse Macabre between the Desiring and the Desired, a linked fight of tempo and rhythm, where players delicately move between odd and even positions.
Veteran Mikol, a shopkeeper and Arts of War Trainer, with his own quest to face his former colleague Lord Vidaan.

The next time you hear from us with be for PDF fulfilment.

Speak soon,

Zach

More Art + Timelines Update
5 months ago – Tue, Mar 24, 2026 at 08:31:00 AM

We've made it to the next Tether/Site of Grace/Bonfire/Lantern of Doomspiral development, and thought we'd post an update while we're taking time to spend all those Thread/Runes/Souls/Echoes.

The team behind Doomspiral are all still hard at work with more beautifully hideous art arriving from Dwyn each week and Eryk fashioning his dreams of A24 Brutalism into book format. Nick and Zach are, fittingly, locked in a great and terrible battle with the endings and template monsters, and like the latter's attempts to defeat Ornstein and Smough, there is much cursing, restarting, and venting in discord channels.

Here’s three new pieces to share with you all!

A Vigil-Keeping Knight of Moiranesse, standing tree tall and terrible in defense of a cathedral in Tar Valarn. This is our Black Knight, our Crucible Knight, our Large Huntsman, a menacing mini-boss that stalks the earlygame and guards gates and doors leading to early treasures.
“Everything is malleable, if you know how. We can’t erase the past, of course. But! If you are smart and cunning, perhaps you can reweave the threads...” Orvo the Pioneer, a teacher of Decoctions and servant of the king of Stalvaggar.
The Latern-Seller, one of Doomspiral's 36 backgrounds, a denizen of Illiquae, depicted with a shoulder-draped Glow-worm.  Illiquae is the realm of Darkness, a land where fate does not hold iron-sway, which the Custodial Church claims to be filled with heretics.

We'll be providing more updates soon, and are now hoping to deliver the PDF sometime in April or May. We're having to adjust timelines, and we always focus on our games being the best they can possibly be, and never sacrificing this for punctuality. We've been taking extra time to adapt our art to the layout, respond to the feedback on difficulty during the playtests, and ensure the information design of the layout is as clear and attractive as possible.

If you made it down this far, next week we're launching Orbital Blues Month via Backerkit. This is a month long celebration of the ORBITAL BLUES, our game of SAD SPACE COWBOYS.  There's not only a tentpole project from SoulMuppet called Outlaws and Corporations, but contributions by 5 amazing creators using our 3rd party license and a cassette EP to link them all together. We launch on 1st April (not a joke) and you should head over to the page, check out all the amazing projects and follow along for more updates.

Thanks for your patience and we'll speak again soon,

Zach

Notification of Accidental Message + Lots of Gods
6 months ago – Fri, Feb 20, 2026 at 02:42:58 AM

Hi all

Sent a message to backers in error, when only the highest tier of backer was meant to recieve it. Sorry for the confusion! The form should no longer be accepting responses. If you are one of the top tier backers who should have got it, I'm going to email you privately.

As way of an apology, I'm going to tell you a bit more about the Gods you recieved that mysterious message about!

Spoilers ahead....

Moiranesse the Guardianess, God of Fate, stern, spear-armed and shield-bearing
Gwyddain, God of Storms, storm-wreathed and armed with his forked-lightning sword
Gentle Amn, God of Death, dead-devouring, shrouded in night and carrying a shepherd's crook
Ceridwhen and Carwyn, The Cursed Gods Desired and Desiring, engaged in morbid dance
Linnea the Twinned, God of Nature, six-armed, bow-wielding and wrapped in winter's cloak
Emyrriad the Corroded and the Golden, God of Ruin and Glory, time-haggard but still glorious

Apologies for the confusion, I hope this sates your desires for an update! More coming soon.

Thanks

Zach
